I, for one, am not surprised. I did expect the margin to be larger given the predictions of a landslide. This has been, from a conservative's point of view, an interesting process. I have been marking time since 1994 when a wave of conservatives were voted in on an overwhelming conservative agenda. About 30 percent of those folks were truly conservatives...the other 70 were political opportunists who, when they stayed in DC for while, lost their bearings and worked their way to the middle. The Dems, in the same time period, have continued to whittle away the bluedogs, marginalized any independent thinkers (helloooo Lieberman) and run-off the fence-straddlers.
I blame this situation and its arrival almost entirely on Republicans, not conservatives. The spineless, but opportunistic guys who brought you Arnold, GWB and McCain are standing around wondering how an inexperienced, untest, blatant leftist-cum-socialist has risen to the highest office in the land.
The answer is obvious. The new wave of Republicans (Bush1 and forward), whose political life is coming to an end, chose middle of the roaders; big gubment conservatives (not possible in my book) and nice guys; McCain, Arnold, GWB et al...nice guys, not conservatives. As a general rule, for the last 25 years: If a conservative measure was on the ballot or agenda put forward, it was voted in. Yet, the new Repubs have missed the obvious and wanted to make nice with people who actually hate them...Pelosi, Ried, Soros, the MSM and Hollywood.(The American left have never been apologetic about their views, largely because they held similar ground with our media. This might explain why the hammer and sickle show up at the Lincoln Park party and elsewhere.)
The Dems did not follow suit. They are systematically, and have been for 30 years, running out their middle of the roaders and becoming more and more left.
So, while the country as a whole is center-right on virtually all issues...the political parties are representing them less and less. Dems move further left, Repubs move further to the center and governing ceases to represent the population. (See the bailout plans, for evidence of this silliness.)
Sometimes in order to bounce back, one has to hit hard. (I hope this is not a repeat of 1977-1980 when a similar political landscape existed in DC. Gosh, those were good times for all.) I think the neo-con/ middle of the roaders need to run out. America is in the process of running them out, one election at a time. Not because they are bad guys, liars and clinchpoops (those guys are in the Dem party), but because they are wrong. GWB has spent like a drunken Democrat...so has Arnold...so would McCain. Get'em out. It is just a matter of time...one, maybe two election cycles.
There are other silver linings, among them is this historic moment where a black man is now the President of the USA. For that, I am proud and pray for him and his family as they deal with this large, large job.

Streamo makes a very good point. Say what you will about Bush. His approval rating is ~3x that of congress, a democrat led congress I might add. Americans are sick of our current leaders across the board, and Bush was hardly the only one acting on regime change in Iraq.

I don't think the average American voted for Obama because of his socialist ideology. I think many just voted against Bush and the Iraq war. Many conservative republicans just failed to be enthused about McCain the RINO (republican voter turnout was lower than in 2004). And 94% of black people voted for Obama.
So you have anti-Bush sentiment, low conservative turn-out, and a sweep of black voters (and most minorities for that matter), and still McCain lost by maybe 3 percentage points. I'd say it was hardly a broad endorsement of Obama policies. In 2012 we get us a true conservative black-Mexican woman for republican president, and it will be a landslide. Oh, but I hear republicans are all too racist to vote for that, I almost forgot. ;-)

Partly true conservatives were not enthusiastic over McCain, and the democrats finally endorsed a decent presidential candidate. I don't consider the last two Bush terms so much a glowing endorsement of his policies by Republicans, as I would a scathing criticism of the last two dumbasses the DNC supported. You have to be pretty fucking unlikeable to lose out to GWB! Too bad we didn't get McCain in 2000, he really missed his chance.
