Opinion on the politcal situation? Yes, there's a big part of me that doesn't give a shit. Focus your scarcest resource, time, on the things you enjoy AND can influence. For me, that's certainly not politics. Do I think for one moment that if I had the deciding vote on McCain vs Obama, Gore vs Bush, etc. that the end result would change that much based on who I put in office? No, I honestly don't, regardless of the supporting cast of characters. It's the puppets and partisans and big industry back pockets that drive the train. Stagnant groupthink will rule, suppress, and normalize letting only the occassional progressive, breakthrough policy survive regardless of the captain and his/her staff. Pessimistic? Probably. Does that mean I don't vote? No, but it means that I don't spend much time thinking and worrying about this crap.
Other universes? My old physics professor would tell me not to focus on things we have yet to detect. It therefore becomes a philosophical discussion. My bent there would be heavily influenced by religion. With that bent, I'd debate that a God or other super-being would have no purpose in creating another universe - especially not a parallel one. Certainly debatable (not interested in doing it here though). If I took the science bent on philosophy, I'd contend that not enough time has passed since the beginning of time to allow randomness probability to approach certainty in creating not one, but two or more simultaneous instances of the same universe.

As far as not enough time passing for randomness and probability to create our other world copies, I'd say, if they exist, other universe's may have been around longer than our own. Is our universe made up of all there is? Our is our universe a bubble in a vast infinite void? If the latter is true then other universe's could've had their "big bang" event at another time, we can't see them because the light has not reached us yet. We are just now resolving the edge of our known universe, 14 billion light years out, which kind of makes nonsense out of your old physics professors statement not to "focus on things we have yet to detect".
