Am I the first to record 4 DOUBLE firsts? ( 1st view AND post???)??? And I just got in and logged on to see what I missed. I think I deserve the GRAND PRIZE!!! OBX, where are you???
what's a first? A first in what; a double first is impossible, once you'r first you have no way to improve, you get all the great views being first, now second is like being the first loser.
During the last eclipse (not total here) I set up my big telescope w/solar filter at a local park to show people the event, the mixed reactions and questions were priceless! Some wouldn't even look for fear of blindness!
August 21, 2017: Sweeps a 70-mile-wide path across the United States, moving across Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
It's really the most visually gratifying way (other than a vehicle in near earth orbit) to see a total eclipse. From the ground you don't get the effect of the conical shadow so dramatically, but then again, from above you don't get all the bizarre side effects from totality. Things like, sudden darkness with bright stars and planets popping out, instant cool down, birds and animals go quiet, flower blossoms begin to close, bees become disoriented and stop flying. Then there's the "shadow bands" which are among the most ephemeral phenomena seen by observers during the few minutes before a total solar eclipse. They appear as a multitude of faint bands that can be seen by placing a white sheet of paper several feet square on the ground, or looking at the side of a light colored building. They look like ripples of sunshine at the bottom of a pool. In "our" current time just a fluke it happens at all because the moon is receding from Earth at a 1/4" per year, we have a mere 1 billion years left before they are gone forever!
The solar eclipse is the one day a year when the devils eye apears in the sky to look at everyones sins simutaniously and record them and this data over all the years of our lives decides whethe or not we go to hell. thats me, the crazy idea guy, peace
Besides my telescope w/solar filter, I look at the sun all the time with two different pair of binoculars, Coronado 10x25 BinoMite Solar Binoculars and my big 20x80s with J.M.B solar filters. Things are quiet now since it's now the time of solar minimum, an 11 year cycle, but when the spots are all over, flares shooting out, CMEs and other phenomena the sun it's an interesting show from a very close star! See some for yourself....
