A short film from 1976 where a camera is mounted on the front of a Ferrari driving at up to 140mph through Paris. The film was made by Claude Lelouch, who was arrested when he showed the film to the public. This file is large, and will take some time to load.

I would think that a red light means stop there too! There must be some spectacular crashes in that country.

in paris at night you can stop and then go if it is safe, people aren't assumed to be as stupid as americans are.

Comments from Lelouch prove that the vehicle that carried the camera was his Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9.[1] A picture was released of Lelouch working with the gyro stabilized camera on his Mercedes. This model, which could reach a top speed of 235 km/h, was only available with a 3-speed automatic transmission. Yet, one can hear gear changes up into 5th, with a high-revving engine indicating speeds of well over 200 km/h. Sometimes one can hear the driver miss gears while attempting to shift as fast as possible, something that is impossible with automatic transmission, proving that the sound was dubbed. It is suggested that the sound was dubbed with the noise of Lelouch's 275GTB, which has a corresponding number of gears and a similar engine note.

A May 2006 making-of-the-rendezvous documentary[4] indicates that Lelouch himself was the driver, that the car driven was the Mercedes, although the sound track is from a Ferrari. One observer was posted close to the Louvre palace at a blind junction (archway) to assist the driver.

uhhhh, really......why......I don't get it. Okay ....No, fuck convention.....you put me as first....I say no. We are such simple creatures, aren't we.......I will rebel in whatever minor, miniscule, infitessimal (ya, I know I didn't spell that right....guesssssssssssssss what....fuk it....) way that I can. Cuz guess what, we are powerless, programmed, simplified, slavish, devoid of thought, blips that exist only to further the few. And I am talking about the very few. Guess what boys and girls, you can count them on one hand!

The sound track was not dubbed. It was much easier to record it during the act.

The soundtrack was dubbed. It is incredibly amazing how well it is done, however, professional racing drivers have been able to pick up the discrepancies.

Not only was the soundtrack dubbed, the car is really not going all that fast. He should be blasting past the cars at warp speed. He isn't. Same goes for the trees......

You get the illusion of speed because he mounted the camera close to the ground.

i want to smack the person that is shifting this car.

look at the speeds he's overtaking those cars, there's no way he's doing anything close to 140. And I don't care what kind of car you're driving, you couldn't make those turns and roundabouts at close to those speeds, least of all on cobblestones! It is a pretty thrilling and impressive drive nevertheless, pretty stupid, but thrilling and impressive.

The sound was definitely dubbed and like another poster said, it was the director's Mercedes (he said he picked it because it had smooth suspension, which would make sense to mount a camera). There's actually a full quicktime version of the film plus lots of info here: http://www.smidgy.com/smidgy/2007/03/drive_through_p.html

I use the film in a human sexuality class I teach, to show the pacing, excitement, thrills, and macho.

I have this on DVD and in that medium the vehicle appears to be travelling much faster than what appears here. Try to find the DVD and watch it on a new, large screen TV - it is much more exciting!

This short film, called "Rendezvous" was an outtake from a longer french film called "Cat and Mouse" or "Le Chat et la Souris".
You can find it here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072776/
If you watch the film, you'll see them do the same thing on a motorcycle, with the instrument pod in full view.
In the film, it was the police investigators driving like this to see if it was possible for their suspect to get from where her alibi was to the place where the murder was committed in time to have committed the murder.
I personally liked the motorcycle scene even better.
