They just don't follow our cultural norms. Not like we don't do things they would consider rude. In their culture, Canuck might not be perceived as such an asshole. Maybe their culture is similar to Canadian culture in this regard?
".....and some isolated pockets within the normally-civilized north".
STILL don't read so good.....do you?
As for my swearing, some folks around here whom I GENUINELY like and respect, have basically had enough of it and have made it known for quite a while now. It is out of deference to THEM, that I shall cease-and-desist my vulgarities.
Don't think for one SECOND, that YOU have any stake in that.
Well I interpreted ".....and some isolated pockets within the normally-civilized north" to be referring to you!
And thanks for finally admitting you were rude and vulgar all along. I kept telling you, but you just didn't listen to me. How long can a non-vulgar Canuck exist? This is just like that question of "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop!"
I lived in Asia for several years (5 in Taiwan to be exact). It was a regular subject for we Western foreigners to vent on how impolite and oblivious people were in public. If I went to a video store, there was always someone who would stand right in front of me and block my view of the selection. In the States, if someone just passes by they say "excuse me" and pass quickly as if they were severely disrupting my space. Holding the door for another was almost unheard of - and if you did - don't expect any acknowledgment for it. As helldiver mentioned - common courtesy in a public arena is simply non-existent. It was easier to just try to accept it, but even after several years there, it would only wear on me and most fellow expatriates that I knew. It could get really bad when walking on crowded streets, trying to queue in line, or worse: driving on the street.
I've noticed that now on the streets where I live in the good 'ole USA. People are quite impolite and will just mow you down on the side walk... like if there are 4 or 5 friends walking side by side and you're coming up to them... they won't make space. Fortunately I'm much bigger and meaner than most of em out there. It does make for interesting encounters tho.
