If corporate media continues to have manufactured overhyped news (Is the release of the iPhone REALLY NEWSWORTHY?), then I think you're going to have stunts like these, just like with the Paris Hilton "fan" (see http://www.glumbert.com/media/parisfan). Did Fox News run this footage all day after it happened?
Because CNN had absolutely no coverage of the iphone. You jackasses are as bad as the self-righteous twits that leave comments that all Americans are *insert generic insult* after watching some dumb video.
Steven Leevey is awesome. He wrote both Hackers and Crypto, Two great books.
Anyways, it's just a corperate publicity stunt. It's not the first time a news station has put hype on a product. Hell, look at the recent console wars. And news by definition is "new information". So there's no "lack" of news here. It's just not significant news. Important, in some ways, yes. Significant, no. The difference is that the iPhone's impact will have only a small effect as far as national and global affairs go. It's important because it's the release of a new "breakthrough" technology according to many. However, it's not really that "breakthrough" in my mind, and is merely a duplication of previously created technology packaged in a sleek UI with some nifty features like google earth which before the iPhone, had yet to be capitalized on.
Really, without preexisting internet successes, the iPhone would be nothing but fancy buttons. It just utilized successes (youtube, google maps) to ensure it's own success.
Publicity segments are to be expected. News cooperations are cooperations you know. They have to make a profit too, and will obviously follow high profile stories to do so. It's not necessarily them pushing garbage down Americans throats. If a majority of Americans didn't open their mouths and let it get shoved down, the media wouldn't cover it. If anyone's to blame for poor news content, it's the consumers who continue to buy it.
And there have been segments like this on every major news station. It's not anything out of the ordinary. So go on bashing a single corperation while you get the same garbage fed up the ass by another. The only real news out there is C-Span, and even it has some downfalls. That's why I tend to just read headlines and skip the political jargon.
