That is an appropriate name after you see hippos engage in
ritual described by hippo experts as "dung showering." They blow crap mixed with urine all over the place to humiliate their hippo rivals and inferiors and mark the territory around their watering hole, swishing their little tails to be sure to get plenty of coverage at nose level.

I'm not sure this is a good idea. I remember reading that hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal including Lions. If it ever got angry or played too rough this thing could kill a person without as much as a blink.
I believe that this is a really heartwarming story. It is amazing what type of bond can be formed with wild animals. It truly should reinforce our belief in the great friendships humans can form with all living things.
That's awesome, but how long do average hippos live? Will her human caretakers live long enough for her? If not, what will the hippo do without them? I hope she won't be put in a zoo...
Yep - so dangerous! And she's still a baby! Check out the video made by Alan Root at Mzima Springs in Africa - he and his wife (sadly murdered in Africa) were filming hippos underwater when one got a tad pissed off at their presence. He had a huge hole gouged in his leg, she had her face mask ripped off as the tusks came within mm of crushing her entire head. That hippo was only displaying mild annoyance with little real moxy!
Altho they say it's weak coffee I can't help thinking that giving caffeine to an animal that'll weigh up to 3 tons, can do 30mph and has teeth that cut crocs in half isn't thoroughly thought through!
On the positive side she won't fit thru the door when fully grown... she'll just bulldozer straight through it. These guys should stick to cape buffalo, lions and dogs.
Jessica the hippo is a wonderful creature that brings love and joy to all who know her. No one need worry about her caffeine intake. It is a very weak mixture. She likes is warm and sweet. Tonie began giving her the coffee when he needed to ween her off milk. She is well cared for by her devoted human parents Tonie and Shirley Joubert. Jessica is free. She has never been captive. She can come and go as she likes. She even visits with the wild hippos down stream from her home. Jessica is part of the family, and plays with all the dogs on the farm, but she has one special dog friend, Gorbi. In rsponse to the idea that she would buldoze through the door, let me say that she is able to unlock and open the door on her own. I don't think Jessica will ever weigh 3000 pounds since she has always been on the small side. When she was born she only weighed 35 pounds compared to the average birth weight of 65 to 100 pounds. Should she ever reach a point where she could not get through the door, be assured Tonie would just make it wider. Who knows maybe she can make it to 3000 pounds
To mako 100, let me tell you that hippo's are not the number one killer of humans in Africa as many believe. Rather that honor can go to lions and crocodiles. Yes, if people get too close they can be in great danger, but hippos usually give a warning to others to back off. Recently five fishermen were killed while fishing near a hippo pod. They were knocked out of their small boat by a hippo, but they drowned. They drowned because they could not swim. Fishermen get as close to the hippos as possible because hippos defficate in the water which attracts the fish....and fish attract fishermen.

richskin.... to answer you question of how do they get Jessica out of the house... she follows them wherever they go. She goes in the house because that is where Tonie and Shirley are. If they go outside she follows. Recently she has developed a bad habbit. To get their attention during the night, she will break the outside water pipe sending a spout of water into the air. She thinks this is great fun...she gets Tonie and Shirley up...and she gets to play in the water. She uses it as her very own water-pick.
rhyolite....It is true male hippos can uninate and deficate at the same time. And they spread it around by fanning their paddle like tale. The odd part is they urinate backwards. Jessica is a lady, and ladies do not make a mess...she leaves that to the bulls. A bull hippo the Jouberts named Fred came to visit Jessica and stayed for awhile. While he was there he began marking the area around her section of the river.
worldcitizen...as I said, the stats on hippos killing more people than lions and crocs is not valid. Tonie, a retired game warden has made this quite clear in his biography to be released later this year. People escaping Mozambique through Kruger National Park, not far from the Joubert farm, would bang pots and pans to keep away the lions. All they were really doing was ringing the dinner bell. One stat said that hippos kill more people than sharks....right....more people fish in Africian rivers than ever get into shark infested waters. Apples and oranges!
rabblerouser...you can have an attack hippo. Female hippos join together to care for their young. They even babysit for each other. After all who is going to argue with a two ton babysitter? Well, Jessica gauds her family as well. Between the cobras, mambas, lions and baboons you can never tell what will be outside the Joubert home. Jessica saved one of the dogs that was having a problem in the water. She picked him up in her giant mouth and deposited the dog on the bank of the river. Once, when a visiting child fell in the river Jessica went under and brought the girl up laying across her snout. I believe someday she may even learn CPR. Jessica does not go in the water when crocs are around. Some of the dogs have been eaten by crocs, so she seems to realize that they are a danger to everyone but her. One of my favorite stories is the "case of the Blacl Mamba". One morning Tonie found a large dead Mamba in Jessica's bed. It had bite marks on it so he thought the dogs got it. On closer inspection in realized the snake was flat. Seems the snake, perhaps seaking warmth, laid next to Jessica's body. She must have rolled on the snake because she flattened it like a pancake. Although her tough skin and protect her from lions, a snake bite could be a problem. A snake bite could reach the blood vessels neaar her skins surface.
Captainconrade...If and when Jessica has a baby, I am sure she will be a devoted mother. I do not think the Jouberts will be in any danger. Infact, I think she will need their help. Because of Jessica's small size (compared to other hippos) she will be older than most when she has a baby. It seems maturity is based more on weight than age.
tarentula....Jessica has already had two bulls that stayed near her. Charlie was there until an idiot neighbor killed him. Fred has disapeared and no one knows what happened to him. There is a pod down stream...I'm sure the dominate bull will take an interest when the time comes.
