My dream has always been to find a good woman to love. Someone that could take me to my twilight years. We could sit on the front porch, and whack any punks on their heads with our canes as they walked by. Riza? Deb? FTB?
First let me say I like sports as much as anyone, but our culture has become supersaturated with this entertainment. It is no longer a pastime, but is unending.
Here is why Americans are Idiots is not completely wrong, and Skid was correct to bring up the Bread and Circus mentality of the elite being fed to us peasants.
If you have children in the US education system, or you are in the US education system then you should watch this documentary on why our system is broken, and why you, or your children are being sold a "sports" education, and not a real education.
This entire covenant between our children and their future has been corrupted by a corporate infrastructure that reaches down into the educational system to corrupt the young and change the curriculum to be sports heavy.
This is necessary to feed sports consumerism, and farm new athletes from the system. In this way the massive ( Federally funded ) Bread and Circus can continue and keep the peasants stupid, and entertained.
Most schools in America spend a overly massive amount of taxpayer money on sport training, sport infrastructure, sport liability, and just massive loss of time, at the expense of a real education. Get real folks, there are maybe 1000 open slots per year in the entire sporting world, and we are training all of our children for those 1000 jobs!
In India and China there is no sport education. They are aware that their future and their country is not, (and never has been), supported by sports. We spend over $200,000 on each of our students, and India spends $200, and they produce better engineers.
We don't need to spend more money on education, but we need to spend the money "ON EDUCATION", and not sports.
BREAD AND CIRCUS
Just remember why ancient Rome fell.Ignorance can be found in any country, ( and that should not be used as a excuse to be ignorant ), but in America this level of ignorance in our people should not be found:
I've stated the sports "mind corruption" link many times in my days...only to fall on deaf ears. When my kids were in high school, in a money saving move, they opted to remove the music program to save the football program (then lost every single game for several years).
"In India and China there is no sport education. "
Sorry dude, but for China that is TOTALLY wrong. They have entire institutes devoted to individual sports. Children are selected at less than 10 years old if they are deemed to be a good - swimmer / gymnast / diver / archer etc. etc. And then they are ruthlessly culled if later they prove not to be international standard.
I'm not saying your thesis is totally wrong, only that China is as fixated with sports, if not more so, than the U.S.
India, you may be right - although cricket is MASSIVE and it's national players are heroes (when they win)
I am paraphrasing a discussion I heard on the radio about this film. I was in error saying that there is no sport education. I meant to say that comparatively to American schools, there is no sport infrastructure.
In the film they found that these nations spend very little public money on stadiums, equipment, etc. I am no expert on China and India, but perhaps some world travelers will add comments of personal experience.
... also I remember that when I was in school, passing physical education was a requirement for graduation. Perhaps it still is.
I, and many of my classmates, were being raised on working farms. We were in no need of physical education, and were mostly dumbfounded as to the requirement to run around like idiots exhausting ourselves for a hour every day, when we all had morning and evening farm work to do.
Where I lived it was and still is poor. Many of my friends would not attend school during deer season so that the family could get enough meat for the winter, but they were punished for missing phys ed!
I also saw that little league is now broadcast nationally!
Miter - As you know, very few Americans are stupid, but many have been forced into ignorance by the elite, whose children do not get their educations from public schools. In private schools, they are given a real education.
I was told a story about a gifted child who struggled to even advance his education in his public school. He was in essence being punished for trying to get AP courses over physical education.
He graduated valedictorian, and later became a doctor, but he nearly was not valedictorian, because a special education student had a much higher GPA, but only a IQ of 60! It was decided by the administration that the student with the 140 IQ would be a better speaker at graduation.
The "no child left behind", has become a program of massive spending on the children with the least productive and limited futures, at the expense of the normal and advanced students.
in america ,for most the only opportunity to get ahead is education , for african americans it it sports or music. in canada it is education, in england what schools you went to , in germany the same. in india it is what caste you were born into , the same in nepal .
