BTW....for you, wicca, and any other admirer of the wonderful language we are gifted with......let me recommend the only book I have read more than once (for fun, not as some assignment) - Bill Bryson's "The Mother Tongue...English, and How It Got That Way".........Bryson is a hoot, clever and a treat to read......in the process of which, one learns an amazing amount of history on our language, one of the most expressive in the world. He is really fun to read....makes you laugh. Meantime, his research and observations are happy side effects. If I taught English, this might very well be my text......far beyond the dry presentations of school books.
Bill Bryson is one of my favorite writers. I got hooked about eight years ago reading "Neither Here Nor There" in the hospital in a foreign country. I would laugh into convulsions while the patient and his family visiting next to me thought I was dangerously insane. Since then, I've read several of his books. Most recently, "The Mother Tongue." Where I live, rarely do I find anyone who has ever heard of him (Southern California). It's nice to know I watch these vids with those of such literary taste.
I didn't know that these videos had literary taste.
Bill Bryson is one of my favorite authors as well. I really enjoyed the book on Australia, "In a Sunburned Country." If you haven't read it, you should. It is a very accurate portrayal of Australian culture and life. I read it after I spent 6 months there. I should have read it before, though. Either way, it brought back warm memories of Down Under that I'll never forget.
When I said "those", I was referring to others who lurk the bowels of Glumbert - and I meant to be slightly ironic. Perhaps I failed.
"Sunburned" is also my favorite. Until I read the book, I always imagined Australia to be rather unexotic for an American...like Canada. One look beneath the surface, though, and it is as alien as Mars - all the poisonous creatures, the story of the guys who pulled a boat through the desert waiting to discover the other side of the island, and countless other great stories. Right in the beginning I knew I was in for a treat when Bryson explained how the country never again saw their Prime Minister after he took a harmless dip in the ocean - and it never made the papers in the US. After reading that book, I will visit Australia at some point in my life by damn it.
two summers ago a women did the same thing in a 37 ft cabin cruiser . It may have been it was the same woman . This gal tore gaping holes in three other boats .
I thought she was going to get killed by the other boat owners.
Luckily for this gal, her husband was a wealthy doctor and paid for all the damages even for the bar tab of everyone watching this happen .
Some of us were rolling on the floor killing our selves with laughter .
The doc was more pissed about that . I still finished my orange juice.
