So the pope now says condoms shouldn't be used to prevent the spread of Aids. Who agrees or disagrees? I think the pope is completely wrong, despite his supposed guidance. His condom ban will result in many thousands of people dying, that might not otherwise have died. Maybe that's good business for churches? Maybe the pope doesn't care how or when you die, so long as he thinks he improved your odds of getting into heaven? I think its immoral, obviously the pope disagrees, and he has God on his side of course. Canuck, Mako, bug, I'm totally giving you an easy sedgeway to start bashing religion again. ;-)
HD - realizing I am painting a target on my back, let me attempt an "apologia papa" (latin speakers - give me a break...it's been 50 years since I last visited this seminal language).
He's got no choice...he can not make exceptions to what is seen as absolutes in Catholicism....any interruption in the natural process of reproduction is unacceptable as it interferes with "life", and man has no privileges in this area. As the leader and spokesman for a world-wide church, the Pope can't play %u201Cfavorites%u201D, a tough position in a world of such extremes as ours is today.
In the developed world, by and large, use of a condom has two purposes%u2026.avoid STDs, and pregnancy. There is no motivation beyond convenience and hygiene. The Pope can not wink at this, and must support the Catholic ideal. We all really know that, don%u2019t we?
In sub-Saharan Africa, however, HIV is in epidemic proportions. I might part company with our papal leader on this. Other than the impossibility of universal understanding and constraint in this largely uneducated and tribal culture, condoms offer some small hope of reducing the spread of HIV. In fact, however, they aren't likely to impact on the problem in a substantial way, IMHO. Willing couples here, moved by nature, aren't likely to use a strange (to them, that's a condom) method of copulating...not in large numbers anyway, I think. But, I'd favor supporting this methodology anyway, as even small measures are worthwhile in this innocent and undereducated area accounting for something like 60% of the world's HIV numbers.
Abortion however, being an extreme measure of birth control, is another absolute in Papal view. There is no room for that in Catholic thought. As often happens, the tragic few are used to justify the concept. Millions of convenience-abortions have been enabled on the backs of those victims of rape and incest. Yet these outrages account for an infinitesimal number of pregnancies%u2026still, they are used to justify millions of %u201Cconvenience%u201D abortions annually. I don't agree with that.
It would appear, he thinks it's better for nature to run it's course. Through the process of natural selection, only the resistant ones will live on and pass thier genes. There are already a lucky few that are immune to HIV, the Swede's mostly, thanks to a mutation in humans that developed in Scandinavia and spread south with the Vikings. The commonality? no CCR5 receptor, the only "lock" HIV has a "key" for. To get the full immunity one must have a copy of the mutation from each parent, if you only get one you still have a high level of resistance. 10 to 15 percent of descendants of Northern Europeans now have this higher resistance. Good ole evolution at work!
Well, as someone who is a 'catholic' (ret.), I can tell you simply that this is yet ANOTHER asinine edict from a religious leader who thinks the fantasy doctrines HE represents (as well as the 'flock' that follow him/them) are 'right'....and everyone wlse is wrong. And based on what? Because HE says The Man Upstairs is on HIS side on this one??? Don't make me puke.
Yet ANOTHER reason of why need to shake of this superstitious crapola once and for freakin' ALL, and grow up and finally get down to solving some serious, critical issues facing our race.

Chaz, you had the guts to take a stand. I'm also a recovering Catholic, never understood how God, Jesus, and the holy spirit were supposed to be the same being. I think the holy spirit got made up just so they could call it the "holy trinity". You're right that the pope has to deal with moral absolutes, no gray area. No what's better for mankind as a hole or lesser of two evils thinking. Guess that's what I disagree with. Anyway, I see no evil to a condom. Sure pro-creation is blocked, but so is abortion, STDs, and AIDs.
So I guess we're not likely to hear the pope recommend anal sex anytime soon?
