It is called a Fire Whirl. The temperatures greatly exceed that of direct flame. Often Fire Whirls will have no visible flame, but carry superheated gas. Several firefighters were critically injred with 3rd degree burns in Northern Nevada in 2006 on a fire near one I was working on. That whirl had no visible flame, it came across the fireline and tagged them about 100yds outside of the fire.
