No, one cannot initiate detonation of C4 (formerly known as "plastique")with a hammer strike, bullet hit, fire, etc. It must be initiated by a primary charge (blasting cap). In Nam, soldiers used to break some off a block, light a corner and cook with it, very safe stuff due to the stabilizers added.
Remember that moron "shoe bomber"? He had RDX (aka C4) stuffed into his shoes, but no detonator. Fortunately the fool thought only a fuse was needed to blow it up.
Miters basic facts on explosives....
An explosion is a chemical reaction that burns or decomposes VERY fast. The chemical compounds break down to form gases and heat. Some are considered low explosive and deflagrate instead of detonate, like the hydrogen/oxygen mix in this video, and is why it is used effectively as the propellant in the space shuttles engines, barring any tank breaches by a solid rocket motor. The rate, or speed of the "burn" of this mix is "only" 4854 mph, many times the speed of sound, thus creating a sonic boom. If you (or these kids) were closer, it would definitely knock you on your ass! This type can be ignited with ease, even just a little static spark can ruin your day.
Now compare that to a detonating type explosive, such as C4, C5, C6, ANFO,Comp C and variations, HMX, KDNBF, NG, PETN, RDX, TNT, Dynamite and the like. These are considered "high explosives" their rate of "burn" is much faster, typically 18,000 mph! In close proximity, this can actually demolecularize you, tearing everything apart at the molecular level, ruining more than just your day!
