Well ethan the demonstration shows that a significant number of people can miss the big picture if they are focused in on a particular detail. That could be important in many ways, crime fighting using eye witnesses, jobs that require attention to alot of different things, and marketing. So its pretty intresting and important.
why is this cut off? I was getting interested in this inattentional blindness...
Also, for those who may not be aware of part of the significance--- in law and getting justice in a courtroom, lawyers try to discredit the witnesses to, let's say, a murder. They are defending a murderer but if they play up, not the fact that the witness saw it happen, but the fact that she was concentrating on writing a report for work while feeding the baby- then you can insinuate that she is not a reliable witness and therefore have no "real" proof of evidence against your client. this type of scenario can work with many different types of trials and in different situations- with the roles being reversed as well (a police officer being accused that he "didnt look carefully enough" while on the stand).
This has been going on for a long time- did they just never have a name to tack on?
I did realise the gorilla getting in the way at the first loop when i was trying to count the throws, didn't know why he was there pounding his chest, so i focused more attentivly on the ball being passed around him. Theres a difference between 'inattentional blindness' and 'importance and point of focus'. I aknowledged the man in the monkey suit as he entered the scene, but his actions weren't of great importance as to the task handed out before the ball passing. Basically this taks would have been alot easier for a female as they have the ability to focus on multiple tasks at once.
I didn't see the gorilla. However, it was hard to count the number of passes because a couple times white players turned their backs to the camera when they may, or may not, have handled the ball.
i totally didnt see that he was an ape, but i did notice the 4th 'black shirt' left the screen and was wondering why. and i counted 15. i clearly missed it, but i did recognize that there was one less on the screen, but not one more when he came on.
It's like a magic trick. Misleading. The instruction is to count the white passes, and try to ignore the black passes. Basially implying, try to observe all white actions and ignore all black actions. Which we do - strangely enough. I can gaurantee everyone would see the ape if it was white. Or green, pink etc.
16 There was a pass in the middle from the girl to a guy but they were lined up to the camera so you couldn't see the pass. TThe only way you know is that someone else came away withthe ball. I saw the ape for a split second but ignored it.
Bad managment message: we gave you an assignment, but we now are holding you accountable for something not related to the assignment. Remember children, don't do what you are told and you will be rewarded.
Love this.......such a reality lesson. I'm smart....missed the ape altogether, so I'm actually not that smart. Bit of a slap upside the head, here. Reality check. Sheesh....hope I do better next time.
