A man was arrested Monday (3/24/08) after he attempted to steal a car in the Gilbert Police Department parking lot.

A video posted on CNN shows a car being stolen as Gilbert police spokesman Sgt. Mark Marino was being interviewed Monday afternoon by 3TV News for a story.

Marino was talking about the recent arrest of a man accused of impersonating a police officer when moving police vehicles caught his attention, he said.

Marino yelled, %u201CWatch out!,%u201D toward an officer off screen whom he believed could be in danger.

A white vehicle then peeled out of the parking lot and was chased by Gilbert police.

Marino said the pursuit lasted only half a minute to avoid danger on the streets.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was apprehended shortly after on Val Vista Drive and Baseline Road, Marino said.

The owner of the stolen vehicle had actually met the suspect.

The suspect was in contact with the owner about buying his car, Marino said.

But the owner, who has not been identified, became suspicious of the man before the sale and led him to the police department, making a call to police along the way.

It is unclear what led him to flee in the vehicle, but Marino said the suspect left his own car in the parking lot.

The man was arrested on outstanding warrants, Marino said.
